Ranges from Saldanha Bay to Natal (common). Found at depths down to 56 m in the eastern Cape. Sometimes caught by offshore trawlers. Although a prized angling fish because of its fighting power when hooked, it is not a popular food fish, and anglers prefer to release their catches (Ref. 12484). Angling record: 100 kg (Ref. 12484). Spearfishing of this species is illegal in Natal (Ref. 12484). Also Ref. 3965, 4440.
